Company Accountant (Finance Operations Lead)

Location: Rathangan, Co. Wexford Full-Time | Permanent | On-site Salary: €60- €70K DOE (higher salary considered for the right candidate)

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and capable Company Accountant to join our team in a key role supporting the Finance Director within a growing, project-based construction business.

This is a hands-on position with responsibility for overseeing day-to-day finance operations, supporting financial reporting, and contributing to process improvements across the business. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information, while also supporting commercial decision-making.

You will work closely with the Finance Director and be supported by external advisors, with the opportunity to take increasing ownership of the finance function over time.

The Role

This role combines operational oversight with core accounting responsibilities, including:

  • Oversight of Accounts Payable and day-to-day finance operations
  • Ownership of key month-end processes and financial controls
  • Project costing and cost tracking within a construction environment
  • Cashflow management and forecasting
  • Continuous improvement of systems, controls, and processes

Key Responsibilities

  • Finance Operations & Accounts Payable Oversight
  • Oversee the end-to-end Accounts Payable function, ensuring accuracy, control, and timely processing
  • Supervise and support day-to-day AP activities carried out within the team
  • Review supplier payments, creditor reconciliations, and account balances
  • Act as escalation point for supplier queries and issue resolution
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and approval processes

Month-End & Financial Control

  • Take ownership of key month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments, and journal postings
  • Maintain and update the fixed asset register, including depreciation
  • Ensure all costs are accurately captured ahead of monthly P&L reporting
  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances
  • Review credit card expenditure, ensuring all transactions are authorised, supported, and compliant with company policy
  • Maintain strong financial controls and data integrity across all processes

Project Costing & Commercial Support

  • Allocate and track costs accurately across projects
  • Monitor project expenditure against budgets and highlight variances
  • Support subcontractor payment processes, including verification of supporting documentation
  • Liaise with project and commercial teams to align financial and operational data
  • Contribute to project cost reporting and performance analysis

Cashflow & Financial Planning

  • Support cashflow management, including forecasting short- and medium-term creditor payments
  • Align outgoing payments with incoming receipts in collaboration with accounts receivable and commercial teams
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Reporting, Compliance & External Liaison
  • Support the preparation of monthly management accounts and financial reports
  • Prepare VAT returns in compliance with Revenue requirements
  • Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners
  • Assist with year-end audit and statutory reporting processes

Systems, Processes & Team Development

  • Identify and implement improvements in financial processes, systems, and controls
  • Support the development of efficient workflows within the accounts function
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure consistency, accuracy, and knowledge sharing
  • Provide oversight and guidance to team members involved in day-to-day processing

About You

  • Professionally qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) preferred
  • Candidates close to qualification, or those with a relevant qualification (e.g. Accounting Technician, CTA) and substantial hands-on financial accounting experience, will also be considered
  • 6–10+ years’ relevant experience, ideally across practice and/or industry
  • Strong practical understanding of P&L, Balance Sheet, and month-end accounting processes and general accounting principles
  • Experience preparing and reviewing journals, accruals, prepayments, and reconciliations
  • Comfortable liaising with auditors, Revenue, and external stakeholders
  • Commercially aware, with the ability to interpret financial information in a business context
  • Experience in construction or project-based environments advantageous
  • Strong Excel and systems experience (experience with Sage 50 accounting software an advantage)
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently with a high level of ownership

Pay: €60,000.00-€70,000.00 per year
